Catherine pairs a gold leaf frame with a raw silk shade, and the combination is what puts this sconce in a different category from a standard metal-and-glass fitting. Gold leaf is applied rather than plated, so the surface carries slight variation and depth that a uniform finish cannot replicate, and it catches lamplight in a way that flat gold paint never does.

Raw silk changes the light itself. The fabric warms the output and softens its edges, throwing a gentle wash up and down the wall rather than a defined beam, which is why silk shades remain the choice in bedrooms, dining rooms and drawing rooms where atmosphere matters more than task lighting. Textural variation in the weave is characteristic of raw silk and part of what is being bought.

At thirteen inches it works either side of a bed, along a hallway, flanking a fireplace or in a dining room where soft wall light is wanted. The fitting is damp rated. Silk should be kept out of damp conditions in practice and dusted with a soft brush rather than a cloth. Installation is hardwired and should be carried out by a qualified electrician. Silk also fades in strong direct sunlight, so avoid positions on a wall that catches full afternoon sun through an uncurtained window.
