Orb Garden Globe Light, 12-25cm

The Orb is a glowing sphere that sits on the ground rather than a fitting mounted on something. Lit, it reads as a soft ball of light in a border, on a lawn or beside a seating area; unlit, it holds its own in daylight as a clean geometric object among planting, which is more than most garden lighting manages.

Four sizes are offered, from twelve centimetres up to twenty-five. Smaller orbs work in groups, clustered in threes at different sizes among low planting, which is a far more convincing arrangement than a line of identical spheres. The larger sizes work alone as a single focal point at the end of a lawn, beside a path or on a terrace where they can be seen from the house.

Both mains and solar powered versions are available in the larger sizes. Solar removes the cable entirely and is the practical choice for positions away from the house; mains versions give consistent output regardless of the weather and are better where the light matters every evening. Orbs sit on the ground surface and should be positioned clear of mowing lines and paths where they could be caught underfoot. Bring the smaller sizes in over winter if the ground is prone to standing water.
